Dwarf Hamsters can sometimes get very, very smelly & oily. They don’t look very nice then! This often happens when someone has forgotten to clean the cage or the hamster’s water bottle has leaked on it.

Actual water baths can give your hamster a cold and may even kill it.The solution is to give your hamster a bath with chinchilla sand or dust. The sand or dust comes in  cardboard or plastic canisters that can be bought at your local pet store.

There are two methods to giving a hamster a dust bath.  The simpilest and most enjoyable way is to simply place a small dish in the hamster cage. The hamsters roll and shake themselves in the dust. It is a enjoyable activity for them and it is really fun to watch!

Another way is two gently sprinkle a small pinch of dust/sand on the hamster, gently rub it into the coat and then blow or brush of the sand.Any remaining sand the hamster will usually shalke off. This method is probalyy best for syian hamsters however as they don’t roll themselves in dust .
